SWEET CHARLOTTE IN THE HIGGS FIELD

Sweet Charlotte in the Higgs Field is the story of a suddenly eternal love stepping lightly through a hard science fiction universe. In the mid-twenty-first century an unexpected explosion of quantum gravity technology opens the gates of multiple universes. Interdimensional travel, politics and spirituality completely change society, its obsessions and expectations over 100 years of astonishing discoveries.

From a particle collider built around the Earth’s orbit to the lawless jungle of the Debris Ring the story unfolds. It continues in the pilgrimage of devotees of a new Bodhisattva through a tachyon anomaly to infinite dimensions and timelines. This is the path taken by our heroine, Charlotte, from her human death and return through a fractal singularity to a new world and timeline where she can start life over again with the one man she will cross this multiverse to capture.

James Blish’s classic Cities in Flight inspired Charlotte in that the first part of four deals with the inventions that make the rest of the story possible. As in the works of C. J. Cherryh, the realistic mechanics of the future form a stage for exploration of what it means to be a sentient being for humans and aliens alike. Like Gravity’s Rainbow, ordinary people are thrust into the steam rolling path of history becoming reluctant heroes and bodhisattvas while still struggling with their petty emotions and loves now writ large.

SWEET CHARLOTTE IN THE HIGGS FIELD, AN EXCERPT

“A lot of things have happened in Purgatory since Charlotte came back from the dead. . .”

What if intelligent energy beings evolved out of the quantum field, were symbiotic with humans and believed that they were souls? What if an invention allowed them to return to this reality, longing to live and love again?

Dan thought, “What kind of slap happy world would that be? A world without fear of death, filled with love?  'Though lovers be lost, love shall not; And death shall have no dominion.’”

Sweet Charlotte in the Higgs Field shows how one small invention, just tinkering, leads to sweeping changes in technology and the fundamental experience of reality; how one small life becomes the basis for an inter-species, inter-dimensional religion as it tracks a relationship from one small moment where a boy captures his dream girl to a love that survives death, quantum physics and the cosmology of the multiverse.

This book took me back to my first love and forward to cosmic love through all the hard sf multiverse I could handle in between. — Delia Sangster- Jungian Psychoanalyst

— — —

There is a love of life and literature that permeates these stories, a shift between hard science fiction and lyrical prose poems, reveries on life, love and consciousness, like the soft wired longing of artificial intelligence for human emotions, something built around, but not of, the hardware of the thinker, like the writer just can’t help displaying, or get out of the way of, his own stream of consciousness and the rocket blast of childhood mornings watching our first leap to the stars on black and white television. Don't miss this journey. — Ruby Devine, Folk Singer
